With so many varying online sources out there it is impossible to come to a conclusive answer as to "how often should I cut my lawn?"
On our constant pilgrimage for information we are always brought to a Canadian or American website preaching the important of keeping your yard in pristine condition, but due to the variance in temperature and seasons along with different grass types it is impossible to compare to our Western European climate.
We will come back to this question in relation to our temperamental Irish environment and the changes we are recently observing with the continuing global warming problems. We also have a few options which will help eliminate and reduce the strains that are placed on your lawn by our natural environment.
How low should i cut my lawn?
The height of your lawn will depend on the type of grass that makes up the majority of your lawn and the current weather conditions.
In Ireland most lawn grass mixes are made up of fine fescue grasses and bent grass. The ideal height for a manicured lawn mix would be between 3 to 4 inches in height, but with ideal watering and fertilisation you can reduce this down to 1.5 inches.
In Ireland we usually have an adequate amount of precipitation to allow for excellent growth of all grass types. But over the past two years we have had extend periods of drought. If you do not have adequate sprinklers installed or if the area is too big for installation you will have to plan ahead. We recommend increasing cut height by 1 inch in times of extended drought to allow the lawn to retain more moisture in than normal. We would also recommend not cutting your lawn during these times as it will put undue stress on the lawn.
Why should I mow my lawn?
Why our monthly maintenance clients want us to take over their lawn and property maintenance is usually either due to a limited amount of time on their side, or wanting for a professional finish for their lawn and property. Pair this with our years of experience and our expert equipment and you're on to a winner.
The main benefits of continually mowing your lawn are:
- Aesthetics: a freshly mown lawn will be the envy of all your neighbours. When a striping mower or a a reel mower is used, we can ensure that the finest finish will be achieved.
- Lawn health: By removing one third of the blade of grass during each cut you are encouraging the grass to keep growing and the form a much more dense lawn.
- Reducing stress: If lawns are mown on a regular basis, the sward grows tough and strong. If the grass is allowed to grow over 4 or 5 inches in height
